Out of the Phoenix... A Tragic Beginning
On November 20, 1847, the propeller ship, Phoenix, caught fire and burned to the water line off the shore of Sheboygan in Lake Michigan. She carried about 175 Dutch immigrants, many of whom perished that horrible day. The survivors carried on, settling in Cedar Grove, Oostburg, Gibbsville, Sheboygan and Manitowoc. This book is a tribute to those lost and the survivors. It is a remembrance of the tragedy, 150 years later.
